Dongsan Hospital’s 300 Successful ESD

Keimyung University Dongsan Hospital has performed 300 endoscopic submucosal dissections (ESD). On May 4, Dongsan Hospital had a celebration event in the cancer center. Many doctors from the Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Center attended this celebration.

ESD is a procedure for dissecting tumors in the colon by endoscopic treatment. ESD has a low tumor recurrence rate and short hospitalization. A patient who receives ESD can go home quickly.

Dongsan Hospital Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Center started ESD for early stomach cancer in 2002. In the past, there was no therapy without surgery for early tumors in the colon. Since March 2007, the Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Center has performed ESD for early tumors in the colon. As a result of ESD, Dongsan Hospital has accomplished a 100% survival rate.

Professor Cho Kwang-bum (Department of Gastroenterology) said, “Colorectal cancer is ranked in the top 4 cancers. Therefore, ESD is very important because cancer is often found early by medical examination. The 300 ESD procedures prove that Dongsan Hospital has a high level of treatment skills.”
