Global Programs to Be World Citizens(1)

KMU has been developing global programs having the educational purpose "To cultivate moral world citizens." The Gazette examined global programs in which KMU students can experience internationalization in KMU and overseas.

Keimyung International College (KIC)
KMU has a new college, KIC, which will be composed of English-only lectures from matriculation to graduation. KIC will start with 60 freshmen who get the KIC Bisa Scholarship in March 2007. The students will attend the lectures of foreign professors and use only English. They will stay in KELI (an English-only residence hall) and join active clubs using only English after class. When they are sophomores, they will choose majors: International Relations (IR) or International Business (IB). Students of IB will have an opportunity to learn international marketing, finance, economics, trade, and e-commerce. Students of IR will take courses designed to provide better understanding of international politics, world systems, international law, and particularly East Asian studies. KIC is developing various programs in which most KIC students will go on international internships and study abroad. The international college is the third in Korea following Yonsei and Hannam Universities and the first in Daegu and Gyeongsangbuk-do.
Selection Standard

Exchange Student Programs
The Exchange Student Program gives students an opportunity to go abroad for studying. The remarkable merit of it is that students pay the tuition of KMU instead of paying the tuition of the other university. However, even though many students are interested in it, few students apply. Recently the competition rate has decreased from 2:1 to 1.5:1.
Even if you are afraid of not getting a high score in language tests such as TOEFL, the Test of Russian as a Foreign Language (TORFL), the Japanese Proficiency Test (JPT), or the Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK), you don't need to hesitate. The test for exchange students consists of four parts: official second language scores, GPA, an interview in Korean, and an interview in a given second language. The total marks decide which students are picked.
Students need to prepare for classes in other universities when they are selected as exchange students. Classes in other countries focus on discussion and presentation. Students are required to speak and write their thoughts in order to adjust to the classes.
Students can join the International Student Exchange Program (ISEP) because KMU is an ISEP member. Students pay not only the tuition but also dormitory costs according to the standard of KMU. ISEP has the same way to select students as exchange students. ISEP has given two semesters to study in partner universities, but it is planning to give one semester from now on.
Selection Standard
GPA (higher than 3.0): 45 points
Official second language scores: 100 points
Interview in Korean: 50 points
Interview in a second language: 50 points
(Total 245 points)

Dual Degree Programs
The students in the College of Business Administration have an opportunity to earn degrees in both Keimyung University and Eastern Michigan University (EMU) in America. When students are freshmen and sophomores, they attend lectures in KMU. Then, when they are juniors and seniors, they attend lectures in EMU. KMU students pay about 8400 dollars tuition fee, which is lower than the 20,000 dollars tuition fee of other international students in EMU. Only 40 students can join this program: 20 students in the Department of Business Administration, 10 students in the Department of Accounting, and 10 students in the Department of Management Information Systems. 7 students went to EMU in November, and 20 freshmen are preparing. Before they go, they must attend more than two English lectures every semester.

Language Courses Abroad
All departments of the College of Foreign Language & Literature and the College of International Studies, except German Language & Literature and European Studies, provide students with various language course programs. These language programs provide studying for one semester with eighteen credits (SSA) or studying for three or four weeks with three credits during vacation (SAP). These programs focus on language studying, while exchange students attend regular classes in universities. In the case of Semester Studying Abroad, students pay the tuition to KMU. Students studying during vacation are given 500,000 won from KMU to help with the tuition of other universities. The tuition and tests depend on majors, and the cost of dormitory and air fare is paid by students. Students who go to universities in the United States need to pay more tuition than other countries. Students in Russian Language & Literature have free dormitory service.
In addition, there are several special programs. First, Chinese Language & Literature provides an opportunity for two students to study for one semester more in the same university. The two students are the best among students who joined this program the previous semester. The two students have free tuition and dormitory in the university. Moreover, KMU gives them air fare expenses. Second, one student in Japanese Language & Literature can go to a university in Japan for one year as a student sent abroad at the state's expense. Students with Japanese majors can apply. The student is selected by best score and is given free tuition, a round trip ticket, and 135,000 yen each month. Third, about twenty students in Japanese Studies annually go to perform a play in Japanese at Shiga University in Japan and experience the culture for about a week in November. All costs except air fare are paid by Shiga University.
