No-Kids Zones

Nowadays, the number of no-kids zone restaurants and cafes has been increasing to prevent problems that children may cause. However, there are differing views about no-kids zones.

These days, the number of restaurants and cafes which are adopting no kids zones is increasing. The meaning of no kids zones is stopping families with kids from entering. Now, many people are debating no kids zones. I agree with adopting no kids zones at restaurants and cafes.

First, kids can make customers uncomfortable. For example, if babies cry loudly, it can disturb people who want to eat quietly and make customers feel annoyed. In addition, kids running around a cafe or restaurant also disturb customers. The root of these problems is the kids’ parents let their kids do whatever they want. In an SBS News interview, one mother said that she understands no kids zones because kids disturb other people. One Internet site about child care named Momsholic baby did a survey about no kids zones, and 73% of people agreed with adopting them.

Secondly, the owners and staff of restaurants and cafes are suffering at work. On Twitter, the owner of a book cafe said there was a kid who made noise and messed up the books, so she protested to the kid’s mother. However, the mother said that it was natural. Like this, there are many problems associated with kids in restaurants and cafes. The portal sites Albamon and Whatdo, which are employment information services, did staff surveys on adopting no kids zones, and 65.5% agreed with adopting them. The atmosphere of the restaurant was the most common reason at 26.6%, followed by reducing dangerous situations at 26.3%. The results show that many owners and staff are disturbed by kids.

Kids make customers, owners, and staff suffer uncomfortable situations. People who disagree with no kids zones may say that if restaurants or cafes make a space for kids, the problems from kids will decrease and stopping kids entering is an abuse of human rights. However, we can’t force owners to build spaces for kids, and the rights of customers, owners, and staff are also important. Therefore, I agree with adopting no kids zones.

No-kids zones are cafes and restaurants that restrict the entrance of children who are from 5 to 13 years old to prevent problems that they may cause. In Korea, the number of no-kids zones is increasing because some children were injured while playing at cafes and restaurants. However, I object to no kids-zones.

First, no-kids zones are discrimination against kids. Seo Yi-jong, a professor in the Department of Sociology in Seoul National University, said, “No kids-zones are discrimination against children. It is evidence that “Kids-ism,” which is like racism, is growing in our society.” Some children make trouble and some mothers are senseless, but others are different. Restricting people’s rights by applying these cases to innocent people is ridiculous. No-kids zones cause serious discrimination against children.

The other reason is we can solve problems related to children without making no-kids zones. For example, there are some branches of McDonald’s that make family zones for families that have children. There are some games and party rooms in these zones. The other part of the restaurant is for customers who don’t come with children. They can eat and drink there. A mother who visited these branches said, “It’s a restaurant that everyone can enjoy. It considers customers who are uncomfortable with children and families that have children.” In addition, some branches of cinema chains such as CGV and Lotte Cinema which are near Seoul make theaters for families who have children. We should not make no-kids zones but family zones for children. If some cafes or restaurants don’t have the place or money to set up family zones, they can solve the problem by buying some toys that children can play with or some books that they can read. Some restaurants give place mats on the table that children can paint with crayons.

No-kids zones are discrimination against children. We need family zones for families who have children, not no-kids zones. We can solve problems related to children by providing something for children. Therefore, we should not install no-kids zones.
