For pre-flight attendants

I surveyed some students who want to be flight attendants about what they wanted to ask Lee Mi-young, who is the director of Sky Academy, which teaches students to become flight attendants. Then, I interviewed her with these questions. Let’s go to meet her!

1. Please introduce yourself.
I’m Lee Mi-young. I graduated from the Department of International Trade and Commerce in Keimyung University. I was a teacher for three years in Sky Academy, and I’ve worked as director since December 2012. When I was a senior, I found out about flight attendants from my friend. I studied in Sky Academy and worked in Asiana Airlines for five years. I was fascinated by traveling and working. Also, I thought the discount system with affiliated companies, including free tickets, was really good.

2. What did you do to achieve your goal?
I did my best to keep in shape and manage my diet. Also, I practiced steadily to get a good posture and smile comfortably, which are important points in the first interview. These days, the interview process is very long, so only a person who has physical strength can get the chance of a final interview. Swimming and exercising stomach muscles are necessary to keep in shape.

3. Is a part-time job or volunteer work useful to be a flight attendant?
I worked in a cafe for three years and learned many things about service. In particular, I learned to give customers something that they wanted correctly, to deal with complaints, and to treat people sincerely. Therefore, I think work experience is really important. In the interview, the interviewer asks about how to handle an emergency situation or how to act in a situation of conflict with your boss. In this point, work experience will be a great help.

4. What do flight attendants worry about that they can't tell anyone?
Flight attendants wear stockings and heeled shoes. They have foot odor. Therefore, they usually keep perfume and use it. Sometimes they wash their feet and change their stockings. If they don’t have perfume, they buy in-flight tax-free goods. In addition, my friend had a car accident where her car was hit by a man, but she could not tell anyone or get angry because she wore the uniform of Asiana Airlines. She worried about Asiana Airlines being badly affected by the accident. Therefore, she didn’t pursue the matter. Also, when flight attendants have to stay in a hotel in another country, a junior flight attendant has to share a room with a senior flight attendant for three years. After three years, some senior flight attendants bring a junior flight attendant to stay in her room. In this situation, if the junior flight attendant uses the bathroom first, she has to make the bathroom completely clean as if nobody had used it.
