Let's Go on a Visit

One Day, Two Nights in Cheongdo

There are many popular cities for traveling in Korea like Busan, Seoul, and so on. However, when people think of Cheongdo, they may think that there are no special attractions for tourists because of the small size of the city. In fact, there are many cool places to see, experience, and eat in Cheongdo. For this reason, the Gazette will introduce you to a few wonderful places in Cheongdo and I promise you will love it!

1. Natural Beauty and Historic Sites

●Sukbinggo

The Sukbinggo was built in the age of King Sukjong of the Joseon Dynasty. The length of the Sukbinggo is 14.75m and the width is 5m. It was built with granite stone in the shape of an arch. It is the oldest and the biggest Sukbinggo in the country.

●Dojugwan

Dojugwan was an accommodation building for government officers in Cheongdo-gun. Doju is another name for Cheongdo-gun. It was athe symbolic building and represented the fact that the central government has jurisdiction over the district. In Dojugwan, there were accommodation facilities for officials and ambassadors of foreign countries.

-To get there: At Cheongdo bus station, take a bus going the direction of Punggak. After 10 minutes, get off at Hwayang station. Then you can see Cheongdo Sukbinggo, Dojugwan and so on.

2. Sights of Cheongdo

●Wine Tunnel

Cheongdo's persimmons are well-known to people, so persimmon wine is also famous. The wine tunnel was originally used as a secret passage to transfer war materials, but now it has been converted into a wine storing place. The Korean drama Terroir was also filmed in this place. This is a nice place to take pictures because there are many beautiful artifacts and places, and people can taste wine while there.

-To get there: At the Cheongdo bus station, take bus number 7 and get off at the Songgeum-ri church station. Then after just a 10-minute walk, you will see the Wine Tunnel.

● Yudeungyeonji Pond

The pond has a long history and is known for the blooming lotus flower in summer. People can take a rest in the Gunja pavilion and there are good trails to walk around Yudeungyeonji Pond. Summer is a good season to see the blooming flowers. However, watching Yudeungyeonji in winter is also picturesque.

-To get there: Take a taxi for 5 minutes from the Wine Tunnel (there are no public buses).

● ProvencePond

This place is known for variety of murals, intimate eateries and a train restaurant. Unfortunately the train restaurant is not operational now. However many people still visit this place to see beautiful murals and feel a fairy-tale mood.

-To get there: At the Cheongdo bus station, take bus number 7 and get off at the lava hot spring station. Then just walk 700m and follow the signs.

3. Food

●Ongchigi

‘Ongchigi’ is Cheongdo's Ohgyeong chicken. This name was derived from an owner of the eatery who described and named the dish for its appearance as a crouching chicken. It tastes like soy sauce chicken or Korean steamed chicken. The price is 18,000 won per chicken, which feeds 2 people. You are going to experience its distinctive taste. If you like a sweet taste, I highly recommend it.
- To get there: get off at the Cheongdo railroad station, go to the Cheongdo market and walk for 10 minutes to the market. Then you will see the sign.

●Chueotang
When you start talking about Chengdo food, Chueotang comes into many people’s minds. So when you get off the Chengdo train station, you will see Chueotang Street immediately. As expected, many Chueotang restaurants line the street. If you want to taste spicy and cool Chuetang, I recommend going Cheongdo.
