Let's Go on a Visit

Seomjin River Train Town in Gokseong, Jellanam-do

Have you ever ridden a train such as the KTX, Saemaul or Mugunghwa? I’m sure that most people have been on a train at least once, but a steam locomotive is not common these days. Steam locomotives were used in the old days, and can be seen in some dramas and movies. In Jeollanam-do, there is a place which is famous for steam locomotives and its beautiful nature. This place is Seomjin River Train Town. Here, there are a variety trains as well as drama and movie sets, rail bikes and beautiful scenery.

At first, I want to introduce the area of Gokseong, which is located in the northeast of Jeollanam-do and at the boundary of the Sunja river and the Seomjin River. To the east of Gokseong is Gurye, in the west is Damyang, and Suncheon and Hwacheon are to the south. These cities are representative cities of Jeollanam-do.

Seomjin River Train Town

Seomjin River Train Town is located in Oji-ri Ogok-myeon, Gokseong-gun. There are many trains here. The steam locomotives operated normally until the 1960s.
Now, however, the locomotive is just used for tourists who want to view Seomjin river. The journey starts at Seomjin River Train Town and arrives at Ga-jeong station. It takes about 15 minutes. In the train, the seating arrangement is mostly different to other trains'. Some seats are the same as other trains, but some seats near the front are more like those found on subway trains. When you ride this train, you can see the beautiful riverside.
In addition, there are sets of movies and dramas. Usually, these sets are made for films and drams taking place around the 1950s. The famous movie TaeGukGi (Brotherhood Of War), and the drama Seoul 1945, Toji were filmed here. Rail biking is also possible (riding a bike along the rail track), and people can admire the tributaries of the Seomjin River. The rail biking starts at Chim-gok station and concludes at Ga-jeong station. It takes about 30~40 minutes. If you do this, you can see Gokseong as well.

Seomjin River Train Town is separated into two parts: one is an old-fashioned , provoking nostalgia. Along with the old steam locomotive and old background sets of movies and dramas, there is also a windmill and rafting place.
