Competitions at Keimyung University

Various international and domestic competitions are held by our university. The Asia-Pacific International Chopin Piano Competition is an international competition, and the National Taekwondo Poomsae Competition is a national competitions. Moreover, the National High School Music Competition, the National Fine Arts Competition, and Youth Musical Performance Competition are for national youth. The Gazette will give information about the international and national competitions in our university.

The Asia-Pacific International Chopin Piano Competition
The Asia-Pacific International Chopin Piano Competition, which is known internationally, was held for the third time in our university from May 12 to 20. It started in 2009 and is held every third year. This competition is held by Keimyung University, Fryderyk Chopin University of Music, the Fryderyk Chopin Society, and the Fryderyk Chopin Society of Warsaw. The competition is recognized internationally by the Alink-Argerich Foundation (AAF) and is a gateway to success for young pianists.

●Qualifications and schedule
This competition is divided into junior and senior sections. In the junior section, people who are between 11 and 19 years old can participate, and in the senior section, people who are between 20 and 31 can participate. The preliminary is evaluated throug a written application and a DVD on which the pianists play a composition. In the final, there are only two compositions and the pianists have to choose one. The final is two months after the preliminary. The compositions are Chopin’s works, and pianists have to choose a different composition at the preliminary and the final. The winners of the competition have a concert at Keimyung Art Center. In addition, the winner of the senior section has a recital concert in Warsaw, Poland.

●Prize
There are prizes for both the senior and junior sections. There are first, second, and third prizes. In addition to these prizes, there are two special prizes in the junior section and three special prizes in the senior section. In the junior section, the polonaise prize and mazurka prize are the special awards. In the senior part, in addition to the polonaise and the mazurka, the sonata prize is the special prize. Mazurka and Polonaise are Polish dance music. Each prize has a medal, a certificate, and prize money. This year, Kate Liu from America won in the senior section and Sun Yul from Korea won in the junior section. They had a concert with Antoni Wit, a conductor, and the Gyeongsangbuk Provincial Symphony Orchestra on May 21. Kate Liu, the winner of the senior section, will have a recital at the Warsaw Opera House in December.

National Taekwondo Poomsae Competition
The twentieth National Taekwondo Poomsae Competition was held in Seongseo campus gym from May 8 to 10. It is held every year. It is national competition, and all age groups from 8 to 66 years old can participate.

●Qualifications and schedule
The competition is divided into two sections. The first section is for professionals, and the second is for amateurs. The participants have to register with the Korea Taekwondo Association (KTA) and have more than a first-degree black belt, which is known as first dan. The first scetion is divided into individual, doubles, and team competitions. Participants can participate in two parts. However, if they did not have a solo match, they cannot participate in any other section. The second section is divided into individual and team competitions. This year, the competition was held from May 8 to 10.

●Prize
In the individuals, double, and team events, a medal and a certificate are given to the winners. Moreover, there are the prizes for the team which gets the most awards from the competition, the best participant, and leadership. In the professional section, the certificates are authorized by both our university and the Korea Taekwondo Association (KTA). However, in the amateur section, the certificates are only authorized by our university.

Youth Musical Performance Competition
The Youth Musical Performance Competition is held by our university and Daegu International Musical Festival (DIMF). In this competition, our university’s professors and members of the executive committee of DIMF are the screening committee. Students perform a scene or a song from a musical for 5 minutes.

●Qualifications and schedule
Students who are in high-school or younger than 20 years old can participate. It is held for two days from late June to early July, which is a similar period to DIMF. This year, it was held in early July at the Blackbox Mini-Theater (College of Music B110). On the first day, it has preliminary performances, and on the second day it has the final and the awarding of prizes.

●Prize
Students who win this competition get a certificate and prize money. Lee Ye-dam from Jakjeon Girls’ High School won the first prize in the whole competition, Jang Hyun-min (Incheon Engineering High School) won the grand prize for male performance, and Kim Da-yoon (Kyeong-gi Arts High School) won the grand prize for female performance. If they come to our university, they can get a scholarship.

National High School Music Competition
The fifty-fourth National High School Music Competition was held in our university from August 21 to 22. The competition evaluates several fields of music.

●Qualifications and schedule
Any high-school student can participate in this competition. However, students who are preparing for the College Scholastic Ability Test, the high school certification exam, or overseas high-school students cannot participate. The sections of orchestra, vocal, piano, and organ have fixed compositions in the preliminary and the final, but if one composition is played in the preliminary, it cannot be played in the final. In the composition section, students compose one composition for the piano for the preliminary, and if it passes, it is played in the final. The competition is held for two days. The preliminary is on the first day, and the final is on the second day.

●Prize
There are a special prize, first, second, and third prize, and an encouragement award. The special prize is given to the student who is the best in the competition, and then there are first, second and third prizes in each section. The encouragement award is given to participants who are good but not good enough to get the other prizes. It the winners of the competition come to our university, they can get a scholarship.

National Fine Arts Competition
The twenty-fifth National Fine Arts Competition was held in our university on August 6 and 7. This competition is for high school students who study the fine arts. Every year it is held in the Daemyung campus of the university.

●Qualifications and schedule
High school students or students who graduated from high school but not entered university can participate. The competition is held for two days, and on the first day, five fields, landscape, still life, photography, trompe l’oeil, which is painting that expresses a situation as if it is real, and basic design, are evaluated. Body sketching, expressive visualization of a situation, and basic design are evaluated on the second day. One person can apply for two fields. The winner is announced two weeks after the competition.

●Prize
A medal and a supplementary prize are given to first, second, and third prize, and an excellence award is given to students who are good but not good enough to get first, second, or third prize. Students who win a prize get a scholarship if they come to our university within three years of the competition. Moreover, an exhibition is held for two weeks at the Geukjae Art Gallery on Daemyung campus.

Various international and domestic competitions are held in our university. These competitions let people know about our university. By holding these competitions, our university can promote a positive image of the school. To the participants, these competitions can be a stepping stone to their future.
