Prohibition of Advance Learning

2014.04.16 15:01:07

Advanced learning prohibition was passed by the National Assembly. The law bans extended curriculum. For example, when instructors make examination questions, they can’t use high school curriculum with middle school students. It will be effective in September. I think there are some positive effects. First, prerequisite learning prohibition makes reliance on private education less. Also, the burden of education expenses will decrease. However, each student has a different level of understanding. Some students who are more outstanding than others need advanced learning. I think that purpose of the law is fine, but I’m not sure that it will go beyond expectations. It remains to be seen whether the law works well or not.

Korea is in the top 5 for high passion for studying. It can easily be found that many parents want to let their children learn something faster than other students, so they rely on private education. It means that young children have to accept difficulties despite their age. In this way, private education increasingly takes the lead because of the excessive greed of students’ parents. This results in children relying on academies not schools. To control this phenomenon, the prohibition of fast learning has recently appeared. I think there are proper study levels at each age. Instead of only focusing on studying faster, it is necessary to remember the natural learning process at the same time. Therefore I hope the law will be enforced in the future.

Due to excessive prerequisite learning, students not only do not focus on their lessons, but they also ignore teachers. From this point of view, prohibition on prerequisite learning should be enforced to normalize public education. But it is unclear that prohibition can regulate prerequisite learning properly and unreasonable that the government limits the students’ right to study. The goal of education is to help learners maximize their abilities. Furthermore Korea lacks natural resources, so we need to develop competent people to promote national interests. To limit the right of learning for talented people is a great loss to the country. In conclusion, the government should find other ways to stabilize public education.

It is better to restrict studying ahead. I agree that there is no certain distinction in learning. However if you are disturbed by the rule of not studying ahead, we can study normal subjects further and deeper. That will be helpful in preparing for the next course. Beyond the individual level, it will lead to a better education system, streamlining teaching and learning methods in public schools. There will be decreased competition in grades among students. Human beings are desperate to achieve their goals. There are no visible goals to judge individuals’ general learning. It is like licking candy but not noticing its flavor. If there is a certain goal that everyone should achieve, the systematically prohibiting learning ahead will make students cooperate and study together with less burden.
